Not your Grandma’s Make Up, or is it?
Make Up is a large part of a woman’s life, especially those of us who work in the beauty industry. Trends come and go and often leave us with piles of unused make up. For this reason, I thought I’d talk about styles that are classified more as “timeless” than “trend.”
Look around at our stylists, estheticians, nail techs and massage therapists and you may find similarities. In each department, someone is rocking a revamped retro style, and with very good reason. Retro is HUGE! It isn’t just us here at the Beauty Bar who have noted and sported this trend, either. Runway models, Hollywood, and TV Programs have noticed and created their own revamped Retro looks. There are three decades, in particular, which are redefining themselves currently: 1940‘s, 1960‘s and the 1980‘s. Which one do you think is right for you? This week’s focus: 1940’s
Women of the ‘40’s often emphasized their eyes and lips and kept the rest simple. “Pin Up” best describes this look. You can make Pin Up as simple or as extravagant as you like. Whether you desire Classic Beauty or Hot Mama you will need the following in your make up kit:
***Light Pink Eyeshadow similar to bareMinerals’ “Light Pink Whisper” which has a shimmer or “Light Powder Pink” for a matte option
***Brown Eyeshadow to contour like bareMinerals’ matte “Light Brown Beige” or shimmery “Light Taupe Beige.”
***For a more dramatic Pin Up, try bareMinerals’ “Azure” eyeshadow. This vibrant, shimmery turquoise will compliment any eye color.

***Bright Pink cheek color
***Liquid Eye Liner in Jet Black
***Mascara in Jet Black like Sara’s Beauty Bar HD Mascara
***Bright Red Lipstick like Sara’s Beauty Bar lipstick in “Red Carpet”
Tutorial for Traditional Pin Up:
Step One: Apply foundation and concealer (if needed)
Step Two: Apply pink eyeshadow color and brown contouring color to lid
Step Three: Eye Liner. This is where you can really start to play around and branch out from classic cat eye, to dramatic. You decide which look you want to rock out.
Step Four: Limitless Lashes! A thick coating of mascara or falsies will really help amplify your eyes.
Step Five: Cheek color, applied to the apple of the cheek
Step Six: Red, red lips.
Helpful tips from your friendly neighborhood make up artist:
Pull your eyelid taut to make eyeliner application crisper and flawless
Red lipstick is renowned for feathering or spreading into the surrounding skin. Ways to prevent this are: nude lip liner on entire lip area. We recommend nude because as your lip color wears off, a nude liner will prevent you from having dark outlines and no color. Also, applying a thin layer of powder on the lip area prevents feathering.
If your red isn’t the shade you desire, you can adjust it with a red lip liner. Apply the liner over the entire lip area and dab a little more lip color over the top.
Avoid adding lip gloss to red lipstick, as this will increase chances of feathering.
Simple ways to add more drama to your look include adding a small amount of a vibrant eyeshadow to the lid, only. If you go this route, it isn’t necessary to contour your eye.
Add a thin line of a metallic liner or shimmery shadow to the outside cat sweep or inner, lower corner on your eye.

I think that all blondes, reds, & brunettes are going to be in style as long as they are natural looking & shiny. No color is off limits.

Threading

Threading is a method of hair removal. A cotton thread is pulled along unwanted hair in a twisting motion, to trap hair in a mini lasso, and lifts hair right out of the follicle. Unlike tweezing where a single hair is pulled out each time, threading can remove an entire row of hair, resulting in a straighter line. Some advantages of threading include it's fast, neat, great for sensitive skin & considered less painful than tweezing or waxing. It can be done for all facial waxes (brows, lip,chin, etc.). We have only one Technician at Beauty Bar that is trained to do threading & her name is Manal. Call us at beauty bar to book an appointment with her- you'll be hooked after the first time! Well, back in September we had a Pre-booking contest for our clients. If they pre-booked 3 appointments with us, they got entered into a drawing to win either an Apple iTouch or a years worth of free services at BB. We drew the two winners last week and....

Also, it's been too long since we've awarded Employee of the Month at the BB, so we brought it back and for the month of January--Jen Tolles is the winner! Dry Hair Solutions

The best thing to do for your dry skin and hair is to protect it!! My fellow stylist is lending her advice on this topic. Please welcome Raquel as our guest blogger today:

A lot of clients keep asking me about dryness & static. This time of year we all suffer from dryness, whether it be chapped lips, rough hands & especially dry hair. I always recommend products for hydration, one of my favorites is Pureology Hydrate shamp & cond. Without a doubt, you need an at home treatment maybe every 10-14 days that moisturizes such as Bumble Deeep Treat. For more intense in-salon treatments that have more penetration and last longer, we have Redken shot treatments customized for each client lasting around 20 shampoos . If you are already armed with all of these hydrating products- the best advice is to avoid washing everyday. There's nothing worse than the dry heater, blow dryer, and then a flat iron/curling iron every single day- it's too much stress on your hair when the weather is this harsh!

My advice for static is to pre-treat your towel dried hair with a primer such as Bumble Tonic Lotion or a big favorite is Redken Satinwear. These products act as a foundation helping to diminish frizz, finish with a light hairspray like Redken Workforce to combat the static.

This time of year one of our most popular treatments are our Paraffin Dips for your hands and feet. The heat from the paraffin instantly opens pores and hydrates the skin. Add it on to your hair, spa, or nail services for $10.

Best Hair at the Golden Globes

Sandra Bullock is sporting long hair these days but you wouldn't know it by this style. It's asymmetrical curls give the fake look of a short style. The curls around the face are very playful.

Lea Michele had the best updo. I really liked the deep side part and the textured volume. Her hair was all tucked aways which really made her eyes & cheek bones stand out- she looked great!

Julia Roberts always looks beautiful. Her blonde waves & center part seemed flawless and natural. I love when people can wear their hair so simple and it still looks so elegant. She looks very bohemian and free. Love it!

HOW-TO: Apply volumizing product to wet strands and blow it dry. Side-part the hair, spritz it with heat protection spray, and wrap sections around a medium-sized curling iron. Going to The Beauty Bar is not your average salon trip. Their exceptional products, including five different scents of brown sugar body scrub, have been recognized locally and nationally, and even used by celebrities. Opened seven years ago by ...Sara Spallino and her husband, Joe, The Beauty Bar began making its own body scrubs and butters for professional use at the salon. By 2005, they were packaging the Sara’s Beauty Bar products for their clients, who, according to Joe, “were going crazy over it.” “There’s nothing on the market like it,” said Joe. The products are all-natural, with such ingredients as shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, and avocado oil. In 2007, the Spallinos sent their peppermint patty body scrubs and butters to be included in 150 celeb goody bags at the Grammy Awards. A few weeks later, fashion designer Lor-E Phillips and Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas contacted Sara for more. “We sent them two huge boxes and emailed back and forth,” said Sara. “We established a relationship, which has been great.” Soon, the Spallinos’ products were not only gaining celebrity attention, they were featured on the Home Shopping Network. “Sara knew from day one that she was going on the Home Shopping Network,” said Joe. Eventually, her dream came true. “We were told there was a one in a million chance to be accepted,” remembered Joe. This month we are offering add-on hair color glazes for only $20! This will help to freshen up your ends and add shine and tone to your hair. It is a semi-permanent color glaze that lasts for about a month. You can get clear, or other tones to compliment your color. It is done at the shampoo bowl and only takes an extra 15 minutes, so it's perfect if you are in between your color appointments and just want to do a quick freshen up! You can tell the staff that you want this glaze done when making your appointment or you can also just tell your stylist that you want to add it on when you come in for your haircut or other hair service.

New Photos in the Salon

A couple of months ago we had an idea to make some new artwork for our salon- so we decided to have a photo shoot. We decided on having a "seasonal" theme, making a photo inspired by each of the four seasons. The group I worked in (Me, Raquel, Kelsey, & Emily) did Fall & Summer. This was a lot of fun- we colored, cut, styled and applied makeup to two "models" and had pictures taken by Ty Photography. They turned out great! Above is the before pictures of Chelsea & Liz along with the final products hanging up in our salon.
We currently have another group working on 2 more looks for Winter & Spring- can't wait to see those photos soon!
